The alterations and additions to this semi detached, original workers cottage were carefully planned with the aim at bringing much needed northern light into the new, modern rear addition and to maximise solar access to the new 1st floor parents retreat. The primary ambition for the project was to modernise and extend the home whilst still keeping the original feel of the cottage and limit the visibility of the additions from the street. The classic terrace layout created a natural transition between old and new, seamlessly opening up to the raked ceilings and white walls of the new kitchen and living spaces. Lime washed floorboards followed by hand picked limestone tiles connects the rear living area and outdoor terrace to the private courtyard. A Scandinavian neutral colour palette was used throughout the home to enhance the light and ample functional storage added. The home utilises the thermal mass of concrete and cavity brick to stabilise its temperature and louvred windows provide cross ventilation. Acoustic Insulation was added between floors and in the walls separating neighbouring properties to create privacy and separation.
